At the Automatica 2012, the Powerball Lightweight Arm LWA 4.6 from SCHUNK has been honored as the most innovative novelty in the category "jointed arm robot" with the MM Award. The prize has been awarded by the trade magazine "MM MaschinenMarkt." This award honors demo units, which are setting standards from the technical point of view, promise a maximum economic benefit to the user, and makes the biggest impression on the editors.
The Powerball Lightweight Arm LWA 4.6 is a compact and agile helper for stationary and mobile applications in the field of service robotics. It disposes of a mass/load ratio of 2:1, and has the world’s highest compact performance. At a dead weight of 12 kg it can handle payloads up to 6 kg dynamically. Thereby it covers a gripping radius of more than 700 mm. Since the wrist is designed in a compact way, the arm can move skillfully in narrow spaces. Its repeat accuracy of 0.06 mm ensures for high process reliability at demanding measuring and inspection tasks. Moreover, the sophisticated design avoids risky squeezing and shearing movements, and the lightweight offers optimum preconditions for applications in the environment of humans.
Due to the integrated intelligence, universal communication interfaces and cable technology for data transmission and power supply, the arm can be quickly and easily integrated into existing control concepts. The manipulator is complemented by an industrial robot control unit with integrated CoDeSys-PLC. Via a hand-held unit with touch display it can be teach-in programmed or instructed. The mechatronic experts from SCHUNK have particularly paid attention to the power supply and the current consumption: A 24 V DC supply allows for mobile use in changing locations. The consistent lightweight design and the torque motors of the latest generation reduce the energy hunger of the lightweight arm to an average of 80 W. Energy costs are reduced, and battery operation pays off in the long run, and allows the use of small-sized batteries.
